A WORD FROM EMMA ON HEALTHY + HAPPY SKIN

The skin is the largest organ of the body and takes on the huge role of filtering toxins and protecting your insides from the environment every day. Many people invest large amounts of money and time in trying to find the perfect topical fix, to correct blemishes, moisturise the skin, dry out oily skin, reduce redness, reduce breakouts and perfect their overall appearance. A great deal of time goes into morning regimes and then more effort at night to cleanse and remove the make up from the day.

As a Naturopath, I believe in nourishing your skin from within by eating nutritious, antioxidant rich and nutrient dense foods, which help to repair damaged skin and improve the overall health of the body. Once you start to “feed” your skin through a healthy diet and lifestyle, you will not need to work as much from the outside to make it appear naturally healthy.

There are a few things you can do, which will greatly improve skin health naturally.

– Stay hydrated
Ensure your skin is hydrated from within by drinking a minimum of 8 cups of water per day. Tea is such a great way to ensure you keep drinking and remain hydrated if 8 cups of water is difficult to achieve. Reduce the need for excessive moisturising by keeping coffee, alcohol and air-conditioning to a minimum.

– Detox your body
Toxicity within will be reflected by unhealthy looking skin, and breakouts. By supporting our organs of elimination, we can help filter impurities and toxins from the body and ensure we reduce the workload for the skin. A great way to ensure you clear these toxins is by adding herbs into your diet, which support the clearance of toxins. Water, fibre and antioxidants also play an important role in ensuring adequate elimination of toxins from the body.

– Feed your skin
Topical applications of creams, moisturisers and cleansers should be as natural and free from chemicals as possible. The products you apply topically will be absorbed into your skin and your blood, and should contain ingredients that you can eat. Otherwise, the toxins applied topically will add to the heavy workload of detoxification for the body, leaving it to filter more toxins from the body.

– Nourishing nutrients
The most important nutrients to ensure optimum health of the skin include essential fatty acids, antioxidants, fibre and wholefoods. These foods are all nutrient dense and packed with compounds that offer support for the skin, which will help nourish, repair and moisturise your skin from within.

– Food as medicine
The following foods specifically support healthy, glowing skin: avocado, fish, nuts and seeds, kiwi fruit, lemon, broccoli, whole grains.

– Herbal medicine
Herbs, which can offer support for your skin, include: Dandelion, Burdock, Calendula, Echinacea, and Red clover. These herbs aid detoxification and support the clearance of toxins from the liver, while also reducing inflammation and lessening the workload for the skin.

– Drink our skin loving blends
We have carefully formulated a herbal blend which offers a combination of supportive herbs for the skin, offering a tasty, convenient and enjoyable way to bring these herbs into your diet. This blend is called Skin Glow – it is caffeine free and is available in biodegradable pyramid tea bags, and as a loose leaf tea. Other blends which help improve the health of the skin, by supporting detoxification, include Liver Cleanse, Detox and Digestive tea, Dandelion Chai and Golden Spice. These blends are also caffeine free, and can be enjoyed anytime of day.
